Computer Science - Fundamental Approach to Standards Training

Agenda


INTRODUCTION - Combined (all grades)

         20 minutes: Introduction to Workshop
         90 minutes: What is Computer Science (CS)? Which standards are we looking at? What is Computational Thinking (CT)?

ACTIVITY ONE - By Grade Level (K-2, 3-4, and 5-6)

         5 minutes: Activity #1 introduction and review of learning objective
         45 minutes: CS Unplugged Activity #1 - Experience (grade level appropriate)
                 Teachers play the role of student, completing activities and observing the presenter’s methods and strategies
         25 minutes: Activity Discussion: connection to CT pillars and standards

ACTIVITY TWO - By Grade Level (K-2, 3-4, and 5-6)

         5 minutes: Activity #2 introduction and review of learning objective
         45 minutes: CS Unplugged Activity #2 - Preparation (grade level appropriate)
                 In pairs, teachers digest and work through a new lesson. They talk through presenting a part of the lesson as well as addressing
                         the standards and computational thinking pillars that the lesson relates to.
         25 minutes: Activity Discussion: connection to CT pillars and standards

30 minutes: Lunch

ACTIVITY THREE - By Grade Level (K-2, 3-4, and 5-6)

         5 minutes: Activity #3 introduction and review of learning objective
         60 minutes: CS Unplugged Activity #3 - Presentation (grade level appropriate)
                 Partner pairs present the lesson that they spent time preparing during the second portion of the workshop.
         20 minutes: Activity discussion: connection to CT pillars and standards (10 minutes between each presentation

ACTIVITY FOUR - By Grade Level (K-2, 3-4, and 5-6)

         75 minutes: Coding Activity
                  K-2nd grades: hour of code that helps students understand the relationship between numbers and quantities.
                  3rd-4th grade: hour of code allowing students to explore the diversity of life.
                  5th-6th grade: hour of code that investigates fractions and multiplication.

         60 minutes: available resources, next steps
